Artist Apprenticeship Project

February - May 2010
Burnaby Art Gallery offers senior secondary students 30 hours of work experience in this program. The group takes the perspective of a professional artist creating a commission. They collaborate with local artist Jay Johnson to create the artwork for, develop, and promote an exhibition. Through the process students are involved in gallery aspects related to exhibiting artwork including curatorial, preparation, presentation, and marketing. Project completion coincides with Youth Week. “This is a great opportunity to learn, to create your own little space and show it to everybody.  It is a very precious experience." J.Jiang, participant

Port City Connect II

Port City Connect II links three classrooms in port cities across the continent. Burnaby Art Gallery is collaborating with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the Shambhala School in Halifax, NS, Burnaby Central Secondary in Burnaby, BC, and Columbia Preparatory School in New York, NY, USA.
Through an exchange of small scale artwork mailings, students explore ideas about their cities as working ports, and how their lives are affected directly and indirectly by their port community.
